Kalaya Training Centre is situated in the Kalangala district of Uganda on Bugala, one of Uganda’s Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria. Although the district is known for its beautiful white beaches, fishing, variety of bird life and lush forests, it has one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in Uganda. The school drop-out rate for girls is also very high.
The school is operated under the by Windows of Hope International Children’s Ministry in Uganda. The students of Kalaya are girls, some orphans and some rescued from the terrorist army operating for years in northern Uganda. These girls have been unable to complete formal education, so the school aims to equip them with skills to enable them to become self-reliant. The program is biblically based and provides mentoring support, life skills development and vocational training for these young women.

Through Classrooms for Africa, ACSI schools in Western Canada donated a grant for building a much needed classroom block for the centre made of bricks with iron roofing. The students and community provided labour and some materials. Funds were disbursed through the Windows of Hope on an installment basis. The new classrooms were completed in time for the 2011 school year.
