Location:
The "Scrapyard" School (Fellowship Bible Christian School) is located in an extremely poor area of Cape Town, South Africa. The nickname derives from the fact that it is run out of an old abandoned auto scrap yard which has been adapted for a school.
School information:
The property contains a large tin roof structure, under which some temporary walls have been erected to house a worship enclosure, some offices and school classrooms. The students at the school are children of workers on nearby farms. Alcoholism is a problem in the community and many of the children show symptoms of FAS. Previously many of the children did not attend school due to academic and behavioural problems, and because of over-crowding in local schools. Local aid workers have seen the need to educate these children trapped in a circle of life-long poverty and hopelessness.
The Fellowship Bible Church started the school a year ago in an attempt to improve the lives of the children and to give them a hope for the future. In addition to providing a Christian education, the school provides a meal each school day from food donated by local businesses. The staff are all volunteer and qualified teachers.
C4A Involvement:
C4A contributes approximately $1000 per month to help cover some of the basic costs and to support the school while they qualify and apply for government funding. The hope is that this will happen some time in 2011.
As government funding will not meet all the costs, C4A will continue to provide bursaries for students at the "Scrapyard" School.
Donors:
So far funding for the project has come for individual donors in Christians schools in Western Canada. Currently six bursaries are in place which we would like to see increase to at least 20. If interested in donating or for more information, please email here.
